A-LF-Sea Ultra Fuel Saving Antifouling Paint ; to be launched in Spring 2013. Advanced Low Friction Coating

Advanced version of LF-Sea delivering further propulsion benefits. A biomimetic super-low-friction antifouling that works using a patented water trapping function to lower the hydrodynamic footprint of the hull. Stable and long term antifouling is guaranteed by the use of a self-smoothing copper-silyl-acrylate copolymer.
It can be applied over existing antifoulings. Used in conjunction with Nippon Paint Marine's 'Rheo' anticorrosive systems, fuel-savings can be further enhanced.

Tuna can swim at more than 100km per hour thanks to a special mucus over their skin.
The mechanism of A-LF-Sea mimics this and provides a verifiable low friction effect.
From the current LF-Sea to Advanced type A-LF-Sea

LF-Sea, the forerunner of A-LF-Sea, has verified an average of more than 4% power reduction in terms of fuel oil consumption and CO2 emissions.
The number of applications of LF-Sea & A-LF-Sea increased to 2,102 vessels in the world ( as of December 2016 )

A-LF-Sea has been developed by enhancing the water-trapping mechanism of LF-Sea in fuel-saving performance targeting 10%.

Technical Background

A-LF-Sea has been developed by enhancing LF-Sea's biomimetic technology.
A new improved Hydro-Gel has maximised the water-trapping that provides the low-friction effect. By incorporating this into NIPPON PAINT's excellent self polishing copper silyl acrylate antifouling, long-term low friction performance is ensured.

Rheology Control

In addition to the new Hydro-Gel technology, the "A-LF-Sea" system utilizes Rheological Control technology for its new anticorrosive coatings. Derived from automotive coatings, which Nippon Paint have been perfecting for many years, this super-smooth base coat helps to lower the ship's frictional resistance.



The combined effect of enhanced Hydro-Gel technology + Rheology Control technology leads to a 15% reduction of frictional resistance.

A 15% reduction in frictional resistance of the flat plate leads to an approximate 10% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions helping ship owners positively contributing to the global environment.
