This application represents the first time we have used AQUATERRAS and we are very satisfied with the results. This environmentally friendly, biocide free, hull coating combines both hydrophilic & hydrophobic micro-domain structures to naturally and actively repel biological adhesion onto its surface. This stops marine organisms attaching to, and growing on, the ship’s hull, improving vessel performance and efficiency. PROJECT DETAILS
Nippon Paint Marine’s Tokyo team promoted AQUATERRAS as a solution that drives operational performance and efficiencies, lowering fuel costs and reducing emissions compared to conventional antifouling paints. AQUATERRAS is the world’s first and, currently, only biocide free self-polishing coating with a proven and verified track record, which, from the customer’s perspective, built important trust in the technology.
THE CHALLENGES
The vessel had an increased risk of hull fouling because it was not on a limited route, but was sailing around the world in multiple different operating conditions that could impact vessel performance. In response to this challenge, Nippon Paint Marine recommended AQUATERRAS as an ideal solution. The product incorporates hydrophilic and hydrophobic microdomain structures that has a proven track record of high antifouling performance, especially on cruise ships, and can achieve good performance, even under severe operating conditions.
THE RESULTS
The customer was looking for a coating solution that could optimise performance in even the harshest operating conditions. AQUATERRAS’s surface is super-smooth and extremely flat due to its biocide free formulation and its self-polishing hydrolysis reaction helps to make a vessel’s surface even smoother over time, effectively self-polishing as the vessel moves, actively repelling any biological adhesion onto its surface. The results and level of support provided by the Nippon Paint Marine team was highly appreciated.
